I play the shahi baaja, an amplified typewriter zither that uses metal keys to alter the pitches of its strings. The shahi baaja is a modern hybrid, an Asian folk instrument with transcultural origins & mutations. My improvisations refract the instrument’s hybrid nature through a delirious, personal sound that is as scattered as it is syncretic.



I started exploring the shahi baaja in 2007 as a soloist & group improvisor. From 2010-2013, I collaborated with Greg Fox (Liturgy, Ben Frost) Bernard Gann (Liturgy) & Alexandra Drewchin (EARTHEATHER) as a member of NYC group Guardian Alien, and, in Alabama, with legendary free improvisors Davey Williams & Ladonna Smith, Them Natives, Johnny Coley, & the Sweet Wreath clique...
